Detroit Tigers' Miguel Cabrera leaves game with sore hip


CHICAGO — It ended up being a costly run to put the Tigers ahead, 3-0, in the fifth inning on Monday night.
Miguel Cabrera came home to score from second base on a two-out, two-run single by Victor Martinez.
Cabrera, who had been bothered by a back injury before the All-Star break, appeared to be in pain after scoring, but he came out the game in the fifth inning with a sore left hip flexor and is considered day to day.
The Tigers went on to beat the White Sox, 7-3, at U.S. Cellular Field.
Tigers starter Max Scherzer (14-1) had not allowed a hit over the first four innings, before giving up a leadoff single to Adam Dunn. After Paul Konerko flew out to right, play was halted as catcher Brayan Pena walked out toward the mound and motioned toward Cabrera. Trainer Kevin Rand came out to the field and manager Jim Leyland followed. Cabrera walked off the field and into the dugout and was replaced by Don Kelly.
The Tigers later announced Cabrera's injury and that he will be re-evaluated Tuesday.
Dayan Viciedo hit a solo home run off Scherzer in the sixth inning.
Torii Hunter, who scored on a two-out single by Prince Fielder to break a scoreless tie in the third inning, hit a solo home run in the seventh to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead.
Conor Gillaspie hit a solo home run off Scherzer in the eighth inning.
The Tigers added two more runs in the ninth inning, including an RBI double by Austin Jackson.
The Tigers scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth, after Hernan Perez was safe on a fielding error by shortstop Alexei Ramirez. Perez stole his first base in the major leagues and with two outs, the White Sox elected to internationally walk Cabrera, who came into the game leading the American League with 96 RBIs, 75 runs scored, 134 hits, 61 walks and a .359 batting average.
White Sox pitcher Chris Sale then walked Prince Fielder to load the bases for Martinez, who continued his blistering July at the plate with a two-run single.
Martinez finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs is now hitting .425 for the monthof July (31-for-73) in 18 games.
Scherzer, in his first start after the All-Star break, improved to 14-1. He allowed four hits, no walks and two earned runs in eight innings with five strikeouts.
Scherzer saw his streak of 19 consecutive games with at least six strikeouts end. It is the second-longest streak to begin a season with at least six strikeouts in 19 consecutive games in American League history.
White Sox starter Chris Sale finished with 11 strikeouts against the Tigers in his first start since the All-Star break.
Sale gave up seven hits, three walks, four runs (two earned) in eight innings.
It is the fifth time this season that Salehas struck out at least 10 batters in a game and the ninth time in his career.
