The glory of United States men’s national team’s victory in the Gold Cup final last weekend was overshadowed by the serious knee injury suffered by Stuart Holden, his third major knee injury in the last two years. Holden had only just returned to action for the Gold Cup and was preparing to return to his English club, Bolton Wanderers, but 18 minutes into the first half, Holden collided with Panama’s Alberto Quintero and suffered a torn ACL. The medical staffs of Bolton and the United States national team are working to devise a treatment plan, but it is likely Holden will miss next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
Holden was graced by an outpouring of support from fans and other athletes, including Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, who is returning from tearing his ACL and LCL in a playoff loss to the Seahawks. Griffin also sent his condolences to the family of Texas A&M lineman Polo Manukainiu, who was killed in an automobile accident Monday.
