Whatever Jadeveon Clowney’s interaction has been with rapper Jay Z, it’s not going to cost him.
Thursday, South Carolina’s assistant director of athletics for media relations Steve Fink released a statement saying, “Based on the facts that USC has gathered, Jadeveon Clowney has not had any impermissible conversations nor has he received any impermissible benefits.”
Earlier this week, the Gamecocks’ defensive end posted a photo on his Instagram account about a report that Jay Z and Roc Nation Sports are pursuing him. The photo was deleted shortly thereafter.
A report from “Inside the League,” a football insider website, claimed Clowney had been in “regular contact” with the rapper/mogul, who recently started his own sports management business and has signed several athletes including the New York Yankees’ Robinson Cano and the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant.
Clowney’s caption neither confirmed nor denied the report, saying, “You know we about to turn up. Dream coming true”
After the news surfaced regarding a relationship between Clowney and Jay Z, South Carolina acknowledged its compliance office was checking out the situation as a standard operating procedure.
There is no NCAA rule prohibiting an athlete like Clowney from speaking with an agent or even meeting for dinner, as long as the player provides his own transportation and pays for his meal, but the two cannot establish an agreement for agent representation, as that would be a violation according to the NCAA bylaws.
