ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi left Jordan Spieth hanging

Teenager Jordan Spieth finished two-under in his opening round at the British Open, just four days after becoming the youngest PGA Tour winner in 82 years. Clearly golf’s next big thing would be getting a live interview on ESPN.
That he did. And it went smoothly until the very end, when Spieth tried to shake Tom Rinaldi’s hand a split-second after Rinaldi turned away. What came next was an instant of awkwardness that we can all relate to, followed by a moment of realization from Rinaldi after the camera cut to a Tiger Woods putt.
Props to Spieth for quickly realizing the handshake wouldn’t be reciprocated. It’s not the rebuffed offer that makes missed handshakes uncomfortable, it’s waiting too long to realize it.
